Skirting Around The Return /onward Ticket Requirement?

Next time I visit PI, I want to buy one way ticket because it gives me more leeway in deciding when (within 30 days) I will return.   But since airlines for departing country and the Philippines immigration sometimes require proof return or onward ticket, I'm wondering if I can just go online Philippines Airlines and temporary reserve a ticket hours before I leave.  They have has this "Hold" option where you can actually reserve a flight itinerary without paying for it (and print it out), but that ticket is only valid in their system for 24 hours until you pay for it.  Since this itinerary has your name and a reservation on it including date of return flight, does anyone know if this sufficient enough to skirt the outgoing airline (the origin immigration almost never asks) and the incoming immigration?

I just hate having a set date and having to cancel / change my flight in case I have sudden change in schedule.  Sometimes the fee can be as much as the ticket itself.

From my experience, I always get asked for return/onward ticket at the check-in for departure but 20-30% chance the PI immigration inquire about my return ticket.
